The Mountains
Tarbena
In the mountains behind the Jalon Valley, lies Tarbena, originally
re-populated with Majorcans when the Christianised Moors were forced to
leave the region in the late Middle Ages. Majorcan sausage spread,
sobrasada, is still made here.
Leading back down to the Jalon Valley, the mountain pass Coll de Rates
is worth visiting, along with the Ferrer sierra and the Parcent forest.
Guadalest
On the uppermost part of a mountain peak, with houses set into the rock,
Guadalest overlooks a deep valley through which the Guadalest River runs.
The town is listed as an historic-artistic complex; the castle quarter can
be reached through a tunnel in the rock and the castle itself hangs over
the peak protected by an ancient wall. Visitors will find small museums
and gift shops. |
